At BellBrook Holsteins, a dairy farm in West Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, where male calves are typically sold for meat due to being excess, one of the 700 calves born this year has been chosen to stay as a pet.
Megan and Barry Coster, owners of a farm, have seen thousands of calves born, but they’ve never seen markings like the ones on their latest calf. “We’ve seen some odd markings before like number sevens or love hearts on the head, but we’ve never seen anything resembling a smiley face before,” Megan told ABC News. Barry was the first to spot the calf’s unique markings, and he quickly took a photo and sent it to his wife. She had to zoom in to ensure it wasn’t a prank by someone. They named the calf “Happy” and decided to keep him as a pet among the other bulls, where he will live his life as a “lawnmower for life.”
